The 40HP32AA is a Class 40, NEMA Size 3 non-reversing contactor for full-voltage switching of three-phase loads. It has three normally open main contacts and a rated operational current of 90 A.
This contactor can be used for switching three-phase motors in equipment such as pumps, fans, conveyors and compressors, provided the motor rating and control supply match its specifications. Its non-reversing design is intended for applications that do not require a change in motor direction.
The rated motor capacities are 25 hp at 200/208 V, 30 hp at 220/230 V, 50 hp at 460/480 V and 50 hp at 575/600 V. Select the contactor using the rating that corresponds to the motor's supply voltage.
The dual-voltage AC coil is specified for 110–120 V or 220–240 V at 60 Hz. These are two voltage configurations, rather than a continuously selectable range. The coil connections must match the intended control supply.
The supplied specifications state a coil frequency of 60 Hz and do not establish suitability for 50 Hz operation. Compatibility with a UK 50 Hz control supply should therefore not be assumed.
The main power contacts are rated for operation at up to 600 V AC at 60 Hz, with a rated operational current of 90 A. The main-circuit voltage rating is separate from the coil's control-voltage requirements.
One normally open auxiliary contact is included, with no normally closed auxiliary contacts fitted as standard. The specifications allow a maximum of seven auxiliary contacts in total when suitable additional contacts are fitted.
No. This is an open-type contactor without an enclosure, and it is not finger-safe. It needs to be incorporated into a suitable enclosure or control panel that provides appropriate protection against access to live components.
This is a contactor rather than a complete protected motor starter. A motor-control assembly must include appropriately selected overload and short-circuit protection; the contactor alone should not be treated as providing those functions.
The specified mounting position is vertical, using surface mounting. Panel planning should allow sufficient space for the contactor, cable connections and any additional components required by the application.
The stated dimensions are 6.4 inches high, 6.75 inches wide and 5.19 inches deep. The technical datasheet lists a weight of approximately 7 lb.
The line-side and load-side box lugs accept one copper or aluminium conductor per terminal, within the specified range of 14 AWG to 2/0 AWG. The stated conductor temperature rating is 75 °C. This terminal capacity does not mean every conductor size in that range is suitable for a 90 A load.
The specified tightening torque is 120 lbf·in for both line-side and load-side terminals, 5–12 lbf·in for coil terminals, and 10–15 lbf·in for auxiliary-contact terminals.
The specified operating ambient temperature range is −20 °C to +40 °C. The storage temperature range is −30 °C to +65 °C, and the maximum stated installation altitude is 6,560 feet above sea level.
The coil has an apparent pick-up power of 310 VA and an apparent holding power of 26 VA. The listed minimum holding power is 14 W. Control-supply selection should account for the higher demand during pick-up.
The stated typical mechanical endurance is five million operating cycles. This figure describes mechanical endurance, not electrical contact life under every load condition.
