This unit evaluates signals from a compatible current measuring module to provide electronic motor overload protection. The 3RB2383-4AA1 also accommodates motor thermistor monitoring, with optional expansion modules available for additional functions.
The evaluation unit is designed for motor protection arrangements covering sizes S00 to S12. The current measuring module must be selected to suit the motor’s operating current.
Yes. Tripping classes 5, 10, 20 and 30 can be selected to suit different motor starting characteristics. The chosen class must also be appropriate for the motor, contactor and associated cables.
Yes. Motor current is measured by a compatible 3RB29 series module, connected to the evaluation unit using a 3RB2987 series flat ribbon cable. The evaluation unit does not carry the motor’s main current directly.
Two rotary controls are used. One selects the maximum current range and tripping class, while the other adjusts the motor current setting between 10% and 100% of the selected maximum. The setting must remain within the connected measuring module’s permitted range.
The rated control supply range is 24 to 240 V AC at 50/60 Hz, or 24 to 240 V DC. This is the evaluation unit’s control supply, not the voltage supplied to the motor.
The unit can be mounted on a 35 mm DIN rail or attached to a compatible 3RB2906 current measuring module. Screw mounting is also possible using the optional 3RP1903 mounting lugs.
The auxiliary and control circuits use screw-type terminals. The terminal blocks are removable, allowing their connections to be handled separately from the evaluation unit.
Yes. Manual and automatic reset modes are available, together with remote reset through terminals Y1 and Y2. Following an overload trip, a three-minute recovery period applies before reset. Automatic reset must not be used where an unexpected motor restart could cause injury or damage.
Yes. Motor thermistor sensors connect to terminals T1 and T2, allowing the unit to evaluate motor temperature alongside current-based overload protection. The specified total cold resistance of the connected thermistors must not exceed 1.5 kΩ.
These functions depend on the expansion module fitted. Suitable 3RB2985 modules can add earth fault detection, a 4–20 mA analogue output, or both. Earth fault detection expansion modules cannot be used with the documented single-phase connection arrangement.
The 6 A figure is an auxiliary contact switching rating under specified conditions, not the maximum motor current the system can monitor. Motor current coverage is determined by the separate current measuring module and the selected settings.
The unit has an IP20 protection rating and a permitted operating ambient temperature of −25 to +60 °C. IP20 does not provide protection against water ingress, so the surrounding enclosure must suit the installation environment.
Yes. The 3RB2383-4AA1 is the bistable-output version of this evaluation unit. This output characteristic should be checked when selecting a replacement or comparing it with a monostable version.
