SICK WTF12-3P2441 is a compact W12-3 series photoelectric proximity sensor designed for dependable object detection in tight installation spaces. Using visible red LED light (640 nm) with foreground suppression, it provides a practical sensing range from 30 mm to 500 mm, with a focused light spot of approximately 7 mm at 300 mm to support accurate detection of small targets and consistent positioning.

Built with a robust metal housing and PMMA front screen, the sensor is rated to IP66, IP67 and IP69K for demanding industrial environments. Setup is straightforward via a 5‑turn potentiometer for precise adjustment of the switching distance, with clear status indication from green (power) and yellow (received light) LEDs. Electrical connection is via a 4‑pin M12 male connector, operating on 10–30 V DC with a PNP complementary output (light/dark switching), up to 100 mA output current, fast response time up to 330 µs, and switching frequency up to 1,500 Hz. Two BEF-KH-W12 clamp brackets with screws are included for convenient mounting.

What type of sensor is this?

It is a photoelectric proximity (diffuse) sensor with foreground suppression, designed to detect objects directly without a separate reflector.

What does foreground suppression mean in practical terms?

Foreground suppression helps the sensor ignore background surfaces beyond the set sensing window, improving detection reliability when there is a fixed background behind the target.

What sensing distance can I expect?

The adjustable sensing range is 30 mm to 500 mm. Actual usable distance depends on the target’s reflectivity, surface finish, angle, and ambient conditions.

How does target colour or reflectivity affect sensing distance?

Higher-reflectivity targets (for example, white surfaces) can typically be detected at longer distances than low-reflectivity targets (for example, matte black). For best consistency across mixed colours, set the sensing distance with the darkest or least reflective target.

What light does the sensor use, and is it visible?

It uses visible red LED light (640 nm). The light spot is approximately 7 mm in diameter at 300 mm.

How do I adjust the sensing distance?

The sensor has a 5-turn potentiometer for fine adjustment. Set the target at the desired detection point, then adjust until the switching behaviour is stable with your real product and background.

What supply voltage is required?

It operates on 10–30 V DC.

What output does it provide?

It provides PNP transistor outputs with complementary (antivalent) switching behaviour, allowing light-on/dark-on style operation depending on which output is used.

What is the maximum output current?

The maximum output current is 100 mA.

How fast can it switch?

It has a response time of up to 330 µs and a switching frequency up to 1,500 Hz, suitable for many high-speed detection tasks.

What connector and wiring does it use?

It uses a 4-pin M12 male connector. Typical pinning is: Pin 1 (brown) L+, Pin 3 (blue) M (0 V), and two switching outputs on Pins 2 (white) and 4 (black).

What do the onboard LEDs indicate?

A green LED indicates supply voltage is present. A yellow LED indicates the status of received light (useful during alignment and set-up).

What environmental protection rating does it have?

It is rated IP66, IP67, and IP69K, offering strong protection against dust and water ingress for demanding industrial environments.

What are the operating temperature limits?

Ambient operating temperature is -40 °C to +60 °C. Storage temperature is -40 °C to +75 °C.

What is the housing size and material?

It has a compact rectangular metal housing. Dimensions are approximately 15.6 mm (W) x 48.5 mm (H) x 42 mm (D), with a PMMA plastic front screen.

Is any mounting hardware included?

Yes. It is supplied with two clamp brackets (BEF-KH-W12) including screws. The device also features mounting provisions such as an M4 threaded mounting hole (4 mm deep) and a Ø 4.2 mm mounting hole.

  • Presence/absence detection of cartons, trays and totes on conveyors and transfer lines
  • Reliable object sensing where a fixed background must be ignored, thanks to foreground suppression (e.g., products in front of machine frames or guards)
  • Part-in-position confirmation in assembly and handling stations (jigs, fixtures, pick-and-place nests)
  • Counting of passing items for throughput monitoring and batching in packaging operations
  • Detection of small components or sub-assemblies at feeders, chutes and escapements
  • Triggering of actuators for sorting, diverting and stop-gate control based on product arrival
  • Verification of product spacing and gap detection between items on fast-moving lines
  • End-of-line checks for pack presence before case closing, strapping or labelling stages
  • Pallet, slip-sheet or load edge detection on pallet conveyors and intralogistics systems
  • Registration and position sensing for indexing tables and intermittent motion machinery
