The SICK WLL170-2P430 is a compact fibre-optic photoelectric sensor amplifier designed for precise object detection in industrial automation applications. It uses a visible red LED with a 660 nm wavelength and supports compatible SICK LL3 fibre-optic cables for both proximity and through-beam sensing arrangements. A 10-turn potentiometer enables accurate sensitivity adjustment, while LED indicators provide clear visual feedback on reception and switching status.

Operating from a 10–30 V DC supply, the WLL170-2P430 features a single PNP switching output with selectable light-on or dark-on operation. Its response time of up to 250 µs and switching frequency of 2,000 Hz make it suitable for detecting fast-moving components and monitoring rapid production processes. A selectable switch-off delay of up to 40 ms provides additional signal control where required.

The sensor connects through a four-pin M8 male connector and is housed in a compact ABS/PC enclosure measuring 10.5 × 35.5 × 83.7 mm. With an IP66 rating and an operating temperature range of -25°C to +55°C, it is well suited to demanding factory environments. The unit is supplied with a BEF-WLL170 mounting bracket for straightforward installation.

What type of device is this?

This is an industrial fibre-optic photoelectric sensor designed to work with compatible SICK LL3 optical fibres. It uses a separate sensing head to detect objects in confined or difficult-to-access areas.

What supply voltage does the sensor require?

The sensor operates from a 10 to 30 V DC power supply and has a typical no-load current consumption of 30 mA.

What type of switching output does it provide?

The WLL170-2P430 provides one PNP switching output, making it suitable for compatible industrial control inputs configured for PNP sensor signals.

Can the switching mode be changed?

Yes. A selector allows the sensor to operate in either light-on or dark-on mode, enabling its output behaviour to be matched to the application.

How is the sensing sensitivity adjusted?

Sensitivity is adjusted manually using a 10-turn potentiometer. The multi-turn design enables precise setting of the switching threshold.

What light source does the sensor use?

It uses a visible red LED with a wavelength of 660 nm. The stated average LED service life is 100,000 hours at an ambient temperature of 25°C.

What sensing distance can be achieved?

The achievable distance depends on the fitted LL3 optical fibre. Typical figures include up to 160 mm for object detection, up to 700 mm with an LL3-TB01 through-beam arrangement, and up to 4,000 mm with an LL3-TB02 and LL3-TA01 lens.

How quickly does the sensor respond?

The response time is no more than 250 microseconds, with a switching frequency of up to 2,000 Hz under the specified test conditions.

Does it include a timing function?

Yes. A selectable off-delay function is built in and can be enabled using a slide switch. The delay is fixed at up to 40 milliseconds.

What electrical connection is used?

The unit has a male M8, 4-pin connector. Pin 1 is the positive supply, pin 3 is the negative supply, pin 4 is the switching output, and pin 2 is not connected.

What do the indicator LEDs show?

The orange LED indicates when the switching output is active. The green reception LED helps assess whether the received light level is clearly above or below the switching threshold.

What are the device dimensions?

The rectangular housing measures approximately 10.5 mm wide, 35.5 mm high and 83.7 mm deep, making it suitable for compact control-panel and machine installations.

What environmental conditions can it withstand?

The sensor is rated for operation from -25°C to +55°C and storage from -40°C to +70°C. It has an IP66 enclosure rating when the LL3 fibres are correctly installed and the protective cover is closed.

What material is the housing made from?

The housing is manufactured from ABS and polycarbonate plastic and weighs approximately 70 g.

What mounting accessory is included?

A BEF-WLL170 mounting bracket is included with the sensor. A BEF-EB01-W190 rail end piece may also be used for block-mounted arrangements.

Where is this sensor commonly used?

Typical applications include object presence detection, part counting, position monitoring, packaging machinery, assembly equipment and installations where a compact remote fibre head is more practical than a conventional photoelectric sensor body.

Does the device have electrical protection features?

Yes. Its protection circuits cover reverse polarity, interference pulse suppression, overcurrent and short-circuit conditions.

  • Detecting small components in automated assembly machinery
  • Monitoring object presence on conveyor systems
  • Confirming component positioning in pick-and-place equipment
  • Counting products during high-speed manufacturing processes

  • Monitoring parts in confined or difficult-to-access locations
  • Checking material flow in packaging and handling equipment
  • Detecting objects using through-beam fibre-optic arrangements
  • Sensing reflective targets using proximity fibre-optic arrangements
  • Providing fast switching signals to industrial control systems
  • Monitoring electronic components and connector pins
