SICK M20S-03140A122 is an M2000 Standard safety multibeam sensor (transmitter) designed for reliable access and presence detection in machine guarding applications. It operates with three light beams at 950 nm and a 400 mm beam spacing (resolution), using optical synchronization with the matching receiver to monitor an open area. The sensing range is configurable from 0 to 25 m, with selectable short-range operation (0 to 6 m) and long-range operation (2 to 25 m), and an 8 ms response time for fast detection.

The unit is powered from 24 V DC (19.2 to 28.8 V DC) and has low power consumption (up to 3.7 W). Status and diagnostics are supported via LED indicators and a 7-segment display, while configuration is performed through hard-wired connection. For integration, it uses an M12, 8-pin system connector (permitted cable length up to 15 m, conductor cross-section ≥ 0.25 mm²). Built for industrial environments, it features an IP65 enclosure rating, operates from 0 °C to +55 °C, and is housed in a compact 48 mm x 40 mm profile suitable for tight installation spaces.

What type of device is this and what is it used for?

This is a SICK M2000 Standard multibeam photoelectric safety sensor (emitter). It is typically used to create a protective light-beam field for access guarding on industrial equipment, where interruption of the beams is monitored by a matching receiver.

Does it require a matching receiver to operate?

Yes. This unit is the emitter and must be paired with the corresponding M2000 Standard receiver (type M20E-03140A122) to form a functioning multibeam system.

How many beams does it have and what is the beam spacing?

It provides 3 beams with 400 mm beam spacing (resolution).

What operating range can be expected?

The scanning range is configurable from 0 m to 25 m. The device supports a low scanning range of 0 m to 6 m and a high scanning range of 2 m to 25 m, depending on the selected configuration and installation conditions.

What is the response time?

The specified response time is 8 ms.

What supply voltage does it use and what is the power consumption?

It is powered by 24 V DC, with an allowable range of 19.2 V DC to 28.8 V DC. Power consumption is specified as up to 3.7 W (DC).

What electrical outputs and monitoring features are provided?

In an M2000 Standard system, the device supports two PNP semiconductor safety outputs (OSSD) with short-circuit protection and cross-circuit monitoring, and it supports external device monitoring (EDM) via wiring.

What connector type and cabling limits should be considered?

Connection is via an M12 8-pin system connector. Permitted cable length is up to 15 m, with a permitted conductor cross-section of at least 0.25 mm² (application-dependent limits still apply).

What environmental protection rating and temperature range does it have?

The enclosure rating is IP65. Ambient operating temperature is 0 °C to +55 °C, and storage temperature is −25 °C to +70 °C. It is specified for 15% to 95% air humidity, non-condensing.

Are there any key installation limitations to be aware of for machines placed on the EU market?

SICK notes that, due to changes to EN/IEC 61496-1 effective May 10, 2015, type 2 devices are limited in how they may be installed on new machines within the EU (typically up to PL c / SIL1), and use as a spare part for identical higher-rated devices is tied to the machine’s original date of being placed on the market. If needed, we can help you compare the existing device marking and wiring expectations to confirm suitability of M20S-03140A122 for a like-for-like replacement.

  • Machine access guarding at operator openings where coarse resolution (multi-beam) detection is suitable
  • Perimeter and boundary monitoring around production equipment to stop motion when the beam path is interrupted
  • Entry/exit monitoring on automated cells (e.g., robot work areas) using a transmitter/receiver light-beam pair
  • Conveyor transfer and merge points where personnel approach needs to be detected across a defined passage
  • Palletizing and depalletizing stations to supervise access through loading/unloading zones
  • Packaging, cartoning, and case packing lines to monitor access at infeed/outfeed and intermittent workstations
  • Material handling lanes and aisle crossings where long sensing ranges help span wider openings
  • Automated assembly and test stations to provide an electro-optical barrier across a work envelope
  • Production line guarding on older installations that use hard-wired OSSD outputs with external monitoring components
  • Retrofit replacements for existing SICK M2000 Standard multibeam installations using the same system connection format
