The SICK GLL170T-B434 (part number 6063341) is a stand-alone fibre-optic sensor amplifier for detecting objects in industrial automation applications. It uses a visible red LED and compatible LL3 fibre-optic cables, allowing the sensing head to be positioned separately from the amplifier. A four-digit display, status LEDs and teach-in controls make it straightforward to set and monitor detection parameters.

The unit operates on 10–30 V DC and has one switching output, configurable as PNP or NPN with light or dark switching. It offers a response time as fast as 50 µs, a four-pin M8 male connector and an IP66-rated housing when the fibre-optic cables are correctly fitted. Its compact dimensions are 10 × 31.7 × 72.5 mm.

What does this device do?

The GLL170T-B434 is a fibre-optic sensor amplifier used to detect objects with a compatible optical fibre. It emits visible red light and provides a switching signal when the configured detection condition is met.

Which optical fibres can be used with it?

It is designed for compatible LL3 optical fibres. The choice of fibre determines whether the sensing arrangement is reflective or through-beam and affects the achievable sensing distance.

What power supply does it require?

It operates from a 10 to 30 V DC supply.

Can the output be configured as PNP or NPN?

Yes. Its single digital switching output can be set to PNP or NPN through the device menu.

Can it switch when light is received or when light is interrupted?

Yes. Light switching and dark switching are selectable, allowing the output behaviour to suit the sensing arrangement.

How is the sensing threshold set?

The device has a teach-in button, plus/minus controls and a display for setting and checking sensor parameters. It also has a teach-in input for electrical connection.

What connection does it use?

It has a 4-pin M8 male connector. The pin assignments are pin 1 for positive supply, pin 2 for teach-in, pin 3 for supply return and pin 4 for the switching output.

How quickly can it respond?

Selectable response-time settings are specified at no more than 250 µs or 50 µs, with corresponding switching frequencies of 2 kHz or 10 kHz.

Does it offer a timed output?

Yes. Available functions include switch-on delay, switch-off delay, one-shot operation and operation without a time delay. The delay is programmable from 0 to 9,999 ms.

What are its dimensions?

The rectangular housing measures 10 mm wide, 31.7 mm high and 72.5 mm deep.

What operating conditions is it rated for?

The specified ambient operating temperature is −25 °C to +55 °C. Its enclosure rating is IP66 when compatible LL3 optical fibres are correctly fitted.

Are mounting and connection accessories listed for it?

Yes. Listed accessories include the BEF-WLL180 mounting bracket, BF-GLL170 protective hood and compatible 4-pin M8 female connectors and cables.

  • Detecting small components on automated assembly lines using a compatible fibre-optic cable.
  • Counting products as they pass a sensing point on a conveyor.
  • Checking whether items are present at packaging or sorting stations.
  • Monitoring objects in confined spaces where a conventional sensor head may not fit.
  • Detecting objects that interrupt a through-beam fibre-optic arrangement.
  • Providing a switching signal to control equipment when an object is detected.
