SICK 1057651 (DT35-B15551, Dx35 series) is a compact mid-range laser time-of-flight distance sensor designed for reliable, non-contact measurement of natural targets across a wide working range. It measures from 50 mm up to 12 m (depending on target reflectivity), offering fine 0.1 mm resolution, repeatability of ≥ 0.5 mm and typical accuracy of ±10 mm for consistent positioning and monitoring tasks.

The sensor supports flexible integration via IO-Link (V1.1) for parameterisation and diagnostics, alongside configurable outputs including a selectable analogue signal (4–20 mA or 0–10 V) and push-pull digital switching (PNP/NPN) with up to two digital outputs available depending on configuration. A multifunction input enables practical control functions such as external teach and laser on/off.

Built for industrial environments, it features an IP65/IP67-rated ABS/PC housing with a PMMA front window, operates from 12–30 V DC with low power consumption (≤ 1.7 W), and uses an M12 5-pin male connector for straightforward wiring. Its small footprint (32 mm × 58.67 mm × 42.7 mm) and low weight (65 g) make it easy to fit into space-constrained machinery and automation assemblies.

What does this sensor measure and how does it work?

It is a laser time-of-flight distance sensor designed to measure the distance to natural targets (no reflector required). It emits visible red laser light and calculates distance from the light’s travel time.

What measuring range can I expect on different surfaces?

Typical measuring ranges are 50 mm to 12,000 mm on high-reflectivity targets (90% remission), up to 5,300 mm at 18% remission, and up to 3,100 mm at 6% remission. Actual performance depends on the target surface and installation conditions.

How fine is the measurement resolution?

The sensor offers a measurement resolution of 0.1 mm.

What accuracy and repeatability are specified?

Typical accuracy is ±10 mm (depending on conditions). Repeatability is specified as at least 0.5 mm (1σ) across 6% to 90% remission targets.

How fast can it measure and switch?

Response time is selectable from 4.5 ms up to 192.5 ms depending on the configured speed setting. Switching frequency options are 166 Hz, 50 Hz, 25 Hz, 12 Hz, or 3 Hz.

What output signals are available?

It provides one analogue channel that can be configured as 4–20 mA (load up to 450 Ω) or 0–10 V (load at least 50 kΩ). Output Q2 can also be configured as a digital output, and there is also a digital output (Q1).

Are the digital outputs compatible with both PNP and NPN inputs?

Yes. The digital output type is push-pull (PNP/NPN), which allows compatibility with a wide range of PLC and controller input types.

Does it support IO-Link and what can IO-Link be used for?

Yes, it supports IO-Link (V1.1). IO-Link can be used for process data exchange, parameter setting, diagnostics, and data storage/archiving of device parameters.

What supply voltage is required?

The supply voltage is 12–30 V DC. Note: when using IO-Link, the supply should be above 18 V; when using the analogue voltage output (0–10 V), the supply should be above 13 V.

What connection does the sensor use and how is it typically wired?

It uses a 5-pin M12 male connector. Typical pin functions are: Pin 1 (brown) L+, Pin 3 (blue) M (0 V), Pin 2 (white) QA/Q2, Pin 4 (black) Q1/C, and Pin 5 (grey) multifunction input (MF).

What is the multifunction input (MF) used for?

The multifunction input can be configured for functions such as laser off, external teach-in, or deactivated. It can also be used to reset the sensor to factory settings.

What are the environmental and enclosure ratings?

The enclosure is rated IP65 and IP67. Operating ambient temperature is −30 °C to +55 °C (with supply voltage up to 24 V), and maximum relative humidity is up to 95% non-condensing.

What are the physical size and construction materials?

The housing is made of plastic (ABS/PC) with a PMMA window. Dimensions are 32 mm (W) × 58.67 mm (H) × 42.7 mm (D), and typical weight is 65 g.

What switching/measurement modes can be configured?

It supports multiple switching modes, including distance to object (DtO), window mode, and object between sensor and background (ObSB). Outputs can be taught-in and inverted depending on the application.

Is the laser visible and what is its classification?

The sensor uses a visible red laser source and is classified as Laser Class 1 (IEC/EN 60825-1:2014).

Which internal reference is commonly associated with this configuration?

This configuration is commonly associated with SICK article 1057651 (type DT35-B15551).
