The Pepperl+Fuchs 133987, also known as UB2000-F42-E5-V15, is an ultrasonic sensor designed for reliable non-contact object detection and distance monitoring in industrial automation environments. Using a single-head ultrasonic sensing system, it provides a sensing range of 60 to 2000 mm with an adjustable range from 90 to 2000 mm, making it suitable for applications where optical sensors may be affected by target colour, surface finish or transparency.

This sensor features a programmable PNP switching output with selectable normally open or normally closed operation. Integrated TEACH-IN functionality allows switching points to be set directly using the membrane keys on the housing or electrically via the learn input. The ultrasonic beam width can also be adjusted, helping the sensor adapt to installation conditions and reduce interference from nearby objects.

Built with temperature compensation, synchronisation capability and a compact F42 housing, the UB2000-F42-E5-V15 is well suited for level detection, presence detection, positioning tasks and general machine automation. It operates from a 10 to 30 V DC supply, supports a rated operating current of 200 mA, and connects via a 5-pin M12 connector. The sensor has an IP54-rated ABS housing and is designed for operation across an ambient temperature range of -25 to 70 °C.

What type of sensing technology does this device use?

This device is an ultrasonic sensor that detects objects by emitting high-frequency sound pulses and evaluating the returning echo. It is suitable for non-contact object detection where optical sensors may be affected by colour, surface finish or transparency.

What is the sensing range?

The sensor has a sensing range of 60 mm to 2000 mm, with an adjustable range from 90 mm to 2000 mm. The first 0 mm to 60 mm is the dead band, where reliable detection should not be expected.

What output type does the sensor provide?

It provides one PNP switching output. The output can be set as normally open or normally closed, allowing the sensor behaviour to be matched to the control input requirements of the machine.

What supply voltage is required?

The sensor operates from a 10 V DC to 30 V DC supply. Its no-load current consumption is 50 mA or less.

How is the sensor connected?

The unit uses a 5-pin M12 x 1 connector. The wire colours follow EN 60947-5-2: brown for positive supply, blue for negative supply, black for switching output, white for the teach input and grey for synchronisation.

What do the LEDs indicate?

The green LED indicates power on. The yellow LED shows the switching state and flashes during teach-in functions. The red LED indicates a fault during normal operation and shows that no object is detected during teach-in.

Can the switching points be taught on the device?

Yes. The switching points can be set using the A1 and A2 membrane keys on the housing. They can also be taught electrically using the teach input, with A1 set via connection to the negative supply and A2 via connection to the positive supply.

What operating modes are available?

The sensor can be set for switching point operation, window operation or hysteresis operation. These modes allow it to detect object presence, monitor a defined distance window or maintain a stable switching threshold with distance hysteresis.

Can the ultrasonic beam be adjusted?

Yes. A key feature of this sensor is the adjustable sound beam in the near range. The beam can be set to small, medium or large, helping reduce unwanted detection of nearby interfering objects.

Can several sensors be used close to each other?

Yes. The device includes a synchronisation input to reduce mutual interference between sensors. It can operate with external synchronisation, multiplex operation or self-synchronisation of up to five compatible sensors.

What environmental conditions is it designed for?

The sensor is rated for an ambient operating temperature of -25 °C to 70 °C and a storage temperature of -40 °C to 85 °C. It has an IP54 degree of protection.

What accessories are commonly used with it?

Common accessories include mounting aids for FP and F42 sensors, sensor mounting brackets and 5-pin M12 female cordsets in straight or angled versions. These accessories help integrate the 133987 sensor into industrial installations.
