The SICK DT500-A111 is a long-range electronic distance sensor from the Dx500 series, designed for precise, non-contact measurement of natural objects in industrial environments. Using visible red laser technology, it offers a measuring range of 0.2 to 30 metres on highly reflective surfaces and 0.8 to 15 metres on low-reflectivity targets. It provides 1 mm repeatability, ±3 mm measuring accuracy and a configurable 0–20 mA or 4–20 mA analogue output.

Housed in a robust IP65-rated aluminium enclosure, the DT500-A111 operates from a 10–30 V DC supply and connects through a 5-pin M12 plug. An integrated seven-segment display and control panel simplify local configuration, while the multifunction input supports external teach functions and laser deactivation. Its reliable time-of-flight measurement makes it suitable for positioning, level monitoring, material handling, storage systems and other long-distance sensing applications.

What type of device is this?

It is an industrial long-range laser distance sensor designed to measure the distance between the sensor and natural target surfaces using time-of-flight technology.

What measuring range does the sensor provide?

The measuring range is 0.2 m to 30 m for targets with 90% reflectivity and 0.8 m to 15 m for targets with 6% reflectivity. Actual performance depends on the target surface and ambient conditions.

What measurement accuracy and repeatability does it offer?

The DT500-A111 offers an accuracy of ±3 mm and repeatability of 1 mm under the stated operating conditions.

What type of output does the device use?

It has one configurable analogue current output, which can be set to either 0–20 mA or 4–20 mA.

What power supply is required?

The sensor requires a 10–30 V DC supply and includes reverse-polarity protection. Its typical power consumption is 3 W.

How is the sensor connected?

It uses a male M12, five-pin connector. The connections include supply voltage, analogue output, ground, analogue ground and a multifunction input.

What is the multifunction input used for?

The PNP multifunction input can be used for external teach functions and laser deactivation. Different input durations allow analogue values such as 0 mA, 4 mA and 20 mA to be assigned.

Does the unit have an integral display?

Yes. The device includes a seven-segment display, operating indicator and control panel for viewing measurements and configuring settings directly on the unit.

What are the response and output update times?

The response time is 250 ms, and the analogue output is updated every 250 ms.

What type of light source is used?

The device uses a visible red Class 2 laser. The typical light spot is approximately 10 mm at 7 m and 45 mm at 30 m.

What environmental protection does the housing provide?

The DT500-A111 has an IP65-rated metal housing with a glass front window, providing protection against dust and water jets when correctly installed.

What are the dimensions and weight of the sensor?

The housing measures approximately 69 mm wide, 50 mm high and 153 mm deep. The unit weighs approximately 1 kg.

What operating temperatures are permitted?

The standard ambient operating range is −10°C to +45°C. Operation up to +75°C is possible when the device is installed with a suitable cooled housing. The storage range is −25°C to +75°C.

What accessories are suitable for installation?

Compatible accessories include straight, A-coded, five-pin M12 female sensor cables in various lengths and the BEF-DSDT stainless-steel alignment unit for accurate positioning.

What applications is this sensor commonly used for?

Typical uses include position monitoring, level measurement, stock handling, crane positioning, automated warehousing and distance measurement on production or materials-handling equipment.

  • Long-range distance measurement in automated production lines
  • Position monitoring of cranes, hoists and travelling machinery
  • Stock level measurement in warehouses and distribution centres
  • Object detection and positioning on conveyor systems
  • Height and profile measurement of large industrial materials
  • Fill-level monitoring in silos, hoppers and storage areas
  • Vehicle positioning at loading bays and handling stations
  • Distance control for automated storage and retrieval systems
  • Monitoring the movement of gantries, lifts and transfer systems
  • Non-contact measurement of natural and diffusely reflecting surfaces
