VIPA 253-1NE00 (2531NE00) is a System 200V IM 253NET Ethernet slave interface module designed to connect up to 32 System 200V peripheral modules to an Ethernet network for centralised I/O exchange. It supports Modbus/TCP communication as well as the Siemens S5 Header protocol, providing up to 256 bytes of input data and 256 bytes of output data, with automatic I/O mapping. The module operates from a 24 V DC supply (20.4–28.8 V DC permissible), features a single RJ45 port with 10/100 Mbit/s auto-negotiation and auto-crossover, and includes status and network LEDs for quick diagnostics. Electrically isolated for robust industrial integration, it mounts on a 35 mm DIN rail and has compact dimensions of 25.4 x 76 x 78 mm with a net weight of approximately 90 g, suitable for control cabinets operating from 0 °C to 60 °C.

What does this module do in a control system?

It acts as an Ethernet coupler (Ethernet slave) for a VIPA System 200V station, collecting I/O data from connected System 200V peripheral modules over the backplane bus and making that data available over Ethernet.

Which Ethernet protocols can be used to exchange data with the coupler?

It supports Modbus/TCP as well as the Siemens S5 Header protocol for reading and writing I/O data via Ethernet.

How many System 200V peripheral modules can be connected to the coupler?

Up to 32 peripheral modules can be connected in one rack to the right of the head module, provided the backplane bus current limits are respected.

What is the maximum I/O data size available over Ethernet?

The maximum address range is 256 bytes for inputs and 256 bytes for outputs.

How are I/O addresses assigned to the connected modules?

Address mapping is assigned automatically from left to right starting at byte 0, with separate input and output areas. Modules with data sizes greater than 1 byte are placed on even addresses to avoid word-access issues.

What supply voltage does the coupler require?

It is powered by 24 V DC nominal, with an allowable range of 20.4 to 28.8 V DC. Reverse polarity protection is included.

What current consumption should be expected from the coupler?

Typical current consumption is 80 mA in no-load operation and up to 1 A rated. Inrush current can reach 65 A (I²t 0.85 A²s), and power loss is approximately 2.5 W.

How much current can it provide to modules via the backplane bus?

The maximum current drain available at the backplane bus is 3.5 A for supplying connected System 200V modules.

What Ethernet connection and speed does it support?

It uses an RJ45 twisted-pair connection and supports 10/100 Mbit/s (10BaseT and 100BaseTX), with automatic speed and polarity detection (auto negotiation) and automatic cable type detection (auto crossover).

What network topology is intended for use with this coupler?

It is designed for a star topology, typically using a hub or switch as the central connection point.

How many clients can connect at the same time?

Up to 8 clients can communicate simultaneously per protocol (up to 8 for Modbus/TCP and up to 8 for Siemens S5 Header).

Can the module provide diagnostics without special tools?

Yes. It includes an integrated HTTP server that displays the detected configuration and I/O status in a dynamically generated web page, and it can also provide read-out of diagnostic information.

What are the default network settings on a new unit?

Units are supplied with a default IPv4 address of 10.0.0.1. Because multiple new units would share the same default address, only connect one new coupler at a time until each has been assigned a unique IP address.

What do the front LEDs indicate?

Status LEDs include Power (PW), Ready (RD), and Error (ER). Network LEDs indicate speed (S), activity/link (A), and collision/duplex state (C) to help confirm physical connectivity and communication state.

Is the Ethernet interface electrically isolated?

Yes. Ethernet and backplane bus are galvanically isolated, which helps reduce the risk of interference between network and I/O electronics.

How is the module mounted and what are its physical dimensions?

It mounts on a 35 mm profile rail (DIN rail). Mechanical dimensions are 25.4 mm (W) x 76 mm (H) x 78 mm (D), with a net weight of approximately 90 g.

What operating environment is it suitable for?

Specified operating temperature is 0 °C to 60 °C, and storage temperature is -25 °C to 70 °C. The housing material is PPE / PA 6.6.

  • Connecting VIPA System 200V I/O modules to an Ethernet network as a compact remote I/O station
  • Providing Modbus/TCP access to System 200V input and output data for PLCs, HMIs, SCADA and industrial PCs
  • Enabling Siemens S5 Header communications for data exchange between Ethernet-capable control systems and System 200V periphery
  • Expanding an automation panel with up to 32 System 200V peripheral modules while keeping I/O decentralised near field devices
  • Retrofitting legacy cabinets by adding Ethernet-based communications without changing the existing System 200V I/O mix
  • Building modular machine skids or small sub-panels where a slim, DIN-rail Ethernet coupler simplifies wiring and layout
  • Segmenting plant networks by placing I/O islands on star-topology Ethernet drops for easier system organisation
  • Basic online viewing of coupler and I/O status through the built-in HTTP interface during commissioning and fault-finding
