Pepperl + Fuchs 106444 is an NJ5-18GK-N inductive proximity sensor designed for dependable non-contact detection of metal targets in industrial automation systems. This flush-mount, M18 threaded sensor features a 5 mm rated operating distance, a NAMUR 2-wire output and a normally closed switching function, making it well suited to position sensing, machine monitoring and presence detection applications where consistent switching behaviour is required.

Built with a robust PBT/PPS housing and PBT sensing face, the sensor is engineered for use in demanding environments, with IP66/IP68 protection and an ambient temperature range of -25 to +100 °C. The unit is supplied with a 2 m PVC cable and offers a switching frequency of up to 500 Hz, providing reliable performance in compact installations where durability, stable sensing and straightforward integration are important.

What type of device is this?

This is a flush-mount inductive proximity sensor designed to detect metal targets without physical contact. It is a 2-wire NAMUR device with a normally closed switching function.

What is the sensing distance?

The rated operating distance is 5 mm. The assured operating distance is 0 to 4.05 mm, which is the range typically used when consistent switching performance is required.

Is this a flush or non-flush sensor?

It is a flush installation type, so it is intended to be mounted flush with surrounding metal in the correct application.

What output does the sensor use?

The sensor uses a NAMUR output and a 2-wire connection format. It has a normally closed output characteristic.

What operating voltage does it require?

The nominal voltage is 8.2 V with an internal resistance of approximately 1 kΩ. This makes it suitable for NAMUR-style sensing circuits.

How fast can the sensor switch?

The switching frequency is up to 500 Hz, making it suitable for applications where relatively fast target detection is needed.

What current does the sensor draw in switched and non-switched states?

When no measuring plate is detected, current consumption is at least 3 mA. When a measuring plate is detected, current consumption falls to 1 mA or below.

What is the operating temperature range?

The ambient temperature range is -25 °C to 100 °C, so the sensor can be used in both low-temperature and high-temperature industrial environments.

What ingress protection rating does it have?

It is rated IP66 and IP68, offering strong resistance to dust ingress and protection in demanding wet environments.

What are the cable details?

The sensor is supplied with a 2 m PVC cable. The cable diameter is 6 mm ± 0.2 mm, the core cross-section is 0.75 mm², and the minimum bending radius is greater than 10 times the cable diameter.

What housing size and material does it use?

It has an M18 x 1 threaded body. The housing is made from PBT/PPS and the sensing face is PBT.

Does the sensor have any mounting accessory options?

Yes. A compatible 18 mm mounting flange is listed as an accessory. For reference, the Pepperl + Fuchs 106444 is commonly paired with this type of mounting hardware where suitable installation is required.

How does the sensor respond to different target materials?

Like other inductive sensors, the sensing performance varies by target material. The listed reduction factors are 0.4 for aluminium, 0.3 for copper and 0.85 for stainless steel 304.

Is this sensor suitable for hazardous area applications?

This model carries multiple hazardous area approvals, including ATEX and IECEx certifications, along with additional regional approvals. Suitability depends on the specific installation conditions and area classification.
