The Festo ADVC-16-20-I-P is a compact, double-acting short-stroke pneumatic cylinder designed for precise linear movement in space-constrained automation applications. It features a 16 mm piston diameter, 20 mm stroke and elastic cushioning rings at both ends to soften movement at the end positions. Operating with compressed air at pressures from 1 to 10 bar, the cylinder provides a theoretical advancing force of 121 N and retracting force of 90 N at 6 bar.

This lightweight 63 g cylinder can be installed in any mounting position and connects through M5 pneumatic ports. Its anodised wrought aluminium alloy housing, high-alloy steel piston rod and NBR and polyurethane sealing materials provide dependable performance in ambient temperatures from -20°C to 80°C. The ADVC-16-20-I-P has no integrated position sensing and can be mounted using its through-holes or compatible accessories.

What type of component is this?

The Festo ADVC-16-20-I-P is a compact, double-acting pneumatic short-stroke cylinder designed to provide controlled linear movement where installation space is limited.

What are the cylinder bore and stroke?

The cylinder has a 16 mm piston diameter and a 20 mm stroke.

What is the operating pressure range?

It operates at pressures from 1 to 10 bar, equivalent to 0.1 to 1 MPa or approximately 14.5 to 145 psi.

Is this a single-acting or double-acting cylinder?

It is a double-acting cylinder. Compressed air is applied alternately to each side of the piston to control both advancing and retracting movement.

What force can the cylinder produce?

At an operating pressure of 6 bar, the theoretical force is approximately 121 N when advancing and 90 N when retracting. Actual usable force may be lower due to friction and application conditions.

What pneumatic connection does it use?

The cylinder uses M5 pneumatic connections.

What type of cushioning is fitted?

Elastic cushioning rings or pads are fitted at both ends of the stroke to reduce impact as the piston reaches its end positions.

Can the cylinder be installed in any orientation?

Yes. The specified mounting position is unrestricted, allowing the cylinder to be installed in the orientation best suited to the machine layout.

How can the cylinder be mounted?

It can be mounted using its through-holes or with suitable mounting accessories. The mounting arrangement should keep the cylinder aligned with the load and minimise side forces on the piston rod.

Does the cylinder include position sensing?

No. This version is specified without position sensing. Applications requiring piston position feedback should use an appropriately equipped cylinder variant or a separate external sensing arrangement.

What operating medium is required?

The cylinder is designed for compressed air meeting ISO 8573-1:2010 air quality class [7:4:4].

Can lubricated compressed air be used?

Yes. Operation with lubricated air is possible; however, once lubrication is introduced, it must be maintained during subsequent operation.

What ambient temperatures can it withstand?

The specified ambient temperature range is -20°C to 80°C. Other components in the pneumatic system may impose a narrower operating range.

What materials are used in its construction?

The housing and covers are made from anodised wrought aluminium alloy, while the piston rod is made from high-alloy steel. The seals use NBR and TPE-U polyurethane materials.

How much does the cylinder weigh?

The product weight is approximately 63 g, making it suitable for compact assemblies where low component mass is beneficial.

What does corrosion resistance class 1 mean?

Corrosion resistance class 1 indicates suitability for environments with low corrosion exposure. Installation conditions should be assessed if the cylinder will encounter persistent moisture, aggressive chemicals or demanding outdoor conditions.

Is the component RoHS compliant?

Yes. The manufacturer specifies the component as RoHS compliant.

Is it suitable for environments where paint-wetting impairment substances are controlled?

The cylinder is specified as conforming to VDMA 24364 categories B1/B2-L for paint-wetting impairment substances. Compatibility should still be checked against the requirements of the complete production process.

What are typical applications for this short-stroke cylinder?

Typical uses include compact clamping, positioning, pressing, ejecting, sorting and handling functions in automated machinery. Its 20 mm stroke is particularly useful where only a short linear movement is required.

What should be checked when selecting a replacement?

Check the 16 mm bore, 20 mm stroke, double-acting operation, M5 ports, mounting arrangement, operating pressure, available installation space and absence of integrated position sensing. Load direction, required force and piston-rod alignment should also match the application.

  • Compact clamping and holding operations in automated machinery
  • Short-stroke pushing and pressing applications
  • Positioning components on assembly lines
  • Ejecting finished parts from production equipment
  • Operating gates, stops and mechanical guides
  • Transferring small components between process stages
  • Actuating tooling in packaging machinery
  • Sorting and diverting products on conveyor systems
  • Providing controlled linear motion in limited installation spaces
  • Repetitive advancing and retracting tasks in pneumatic systems
