The ABB PSR37-600-70 is a compact softstarter designed to provide controlled starting and stopping for three-phase AC motors. Rated at 37 A, it operates across a main voltage range of 208–600 V AC and uses a 100–240 V AC, 50/60 Hz control supply. Its two-phase voltage-ramp control helps reduce motor starting current and mechanical stress on connected equipment.

A built-in bypass minimises energy losses during normal operation, while three front-mounted potentiometers simplify adjustment of the start ramp, stop ramp and initial voltage. LED indicators and relay outputs provide clear operating status information. Supporting motor ratings of 7.5 kW at 230 V, 18.5 kW at 400 V and 22 kW at 500 V, the PSR37-600-70 is suitable for pumps, fans, compressors, conveyors and other industrial motor-driven applications.

What type of device is this?

It is a compact industrial soft starter designed to control the starting and stopping of three-phase AC motors. The ABB PSR37-600-70 uses a voltage ramp to reduce sudden electrical and mechanical stresses.

What is the rated operational current?

The rated operational current for an in-line connection is 37 A.

What main circuit voltage range does it support?

It supports a rated operational voltage range of 208 to 600 V AC at 50 or 60 Hz.

What control supply voltage is required?

This version requires a control supply of 100 to 240 V AC at 50 or 60 Hz.

What motor power ratings can it handle?

The rated operational power is 7.5 kW at 230 V, 18.5 kW at 400 V and 22 kW at 500 V. Final selection should also consider motor current, starting duty and operating conditions.

Does it provide both soft starting and soft stopping?

Yes. It provides two-phase-controlled soft starting and soft stopping through an adjustable voltage ramp.

How are the starting and stopping characteristics adjusted?

Three potentiometers on the front are used to set the starting ramp time, stopping ramp time and initial or end voltage level.

What ramp-time settings are available?

The starting ramp can be adjusted from 1 to 20 seconds, while the stopping ramp can be adjusted from 0 to 20 seconds.

What initial voltage range can be selected?

The initial voltage during starting can be adjusted between 40% and 70%.

Does it have an integrated bypass?

Yes. A built-in bypass reduces power losses after the motor reaches normal operating speed and helps simplify panel installation.

Does it include electronic motor overload protection?

No. Integrated electronic overload protection is not included, so suitable external motor protection must be selected for the application.

What is its starting capacity at rated current?

Its stated starting capacity is four times the rated operational current for six seconds.

What status indications are provided?

Green LED indicators show ready or on status, running status, completion of the starting ramp and ramping up or down.

Are relay outputs available for monitoring?

Yes. Relay outputs provide RUN and top-of-ramp signals for integration with external control equipment.

Can it communicate with an industrial fieldbus network?

Optional fieldbus communication can be added using a compatible external fieldbus plug adaptor and fieldbus plug.

What are typical applications?

Typical applications include pumps, fans, compressors and conveyors where a controlled motor start or stop can reduce mechanical shock and starting current.

What are the unit's dimensions and weight?

The unit measures approximately 153 mm wide, 187 mm high and 54 mm deep, with a net weight of about 1 kg.

What operating temperature range is specified?

The specified ambient operating range is -25°C to +60°C. Current derating may be required when operating above 40°C.

What is the degree of protection at the main terminals?

The main circuit terminal area is rated IP10, so the unit is intended for installation within a suitable enclosure.

What mounting methods can be used?

This model can be installed using screw mounting or DIN-rail mounting, allowing it to fit a range of control-panel layouts.

  • Controlled starting and stopping of three-phase induction motors
  • Pump systems requiring reduced pressure surges during start-up and shutdown
  • Fan and ventilation installations needing smooth acceleration
  • Conveyor systems where gradual movement helps limit mechanical strain
  • Compressor applications requiring reduced starting current
  • Material-handling equipment needing controlled motor torque
  • Industrial machinery requiring fewer electrical and mechanical stresses during start-up
  • Compact motor-control panels with limited installation space
  • Applications using manual motor starters for overload and short-circuit protection
  • Automated systems requiring run and top-of-ramp status signals
