Pilz PSEN CS4.1P is a fully coded, non-contact RFID safety switch designed for reliable position monitoring of moveable guards such as hinged or sliding doors, covers, and hatches on industrial machinery. Using transponder technology, it supports one direction of actuation and offers a compact, robust housing suited to harsh environments, with high ingress protection (IP6K9K housing, IP67 at the connector).

The PSEN CS4.1P operates on 24 V DC and provides two safe semiconductor (OSSD) outputs plus two inputs to enable straightforward integration, including series connection of multiple switches where required. Connection is via an 8-pin M8 male connector, and the device features status indication LEDs for clear on-machine diagnostics. Typical operating distance is 11 mm with an assured operating distance (Sao) of 8 mm and assured release distance (Sar) of 20 mm. Supplied as the switch unit only; a compatible coded actuator is required separately.

What does this device do in a guarding application?

It is a non-contact, coded transponder switch used to monitor the position of a movable guard (such as a door or cover). When the taught-in actuator is within the response range, the device enables its two safe semiconductor outputs for connection to a suitable evaluation unit.

Does it require a matching actuator to operate?

Yes. The switch is supplied as a sensor only and needs a compatible coded actuator. Common matched actuators in this family include the PSEN cs4.1 actuator (e.g., order no. 541180) and other approved variants depending on the mechanical design.

How does the coding help reduce unintended actuation?

This model uses a fully coded transponder principle, so it responds only to a taught-in actuator. This helps prevent actuation by nearby, non-matching actuators and supports more controlled access monitoring.

How many times can a new actuator be taught in?

A total of up to 8 learning (teach-in) procedures are possible. Each successful teach-in reduces the remaining count by one, so it is best to plan actuator management during commissioning and maintenance.

What are the typical operating and assured switching distances?

With parallel, face-to-face installation using the matched cs4.1 actuator, the typical operating distance is about 11 mm and the assured operating distance (Sao) is 8 mm. The assured release distance (Sar) is 20 mm. Distances can vary if installed in other orientations or near conductive materials.

What electrical supply does it need?

It is designed for 24 V DC operation (with a tolerance of -20% to +20%). Power consumption is approximately 1 W for the device.

What type of outputs and inputs does it provide?

It provides two OSSD-style safe semiconductor outputs and two input channels. This supports two-channel monitoring with plausibility checking when used with an appropriate evaluation device.

What connector and pin layout does it use?

This variant uses an 8-pin M8 male connector. Typical pin functions include: supply (+24 V and 0 V), two output channels (12/22), two input channels (S11/S21), and diagnostic signalling (Y1/Y32) for additional status/diagnostics integration.

Can multiple devices be connected in series?

Yes, it can be wired in series. When designing a series connection, the overall system design should consider diagnostic needs, voltage drop, and measures to reduce bypassing, as well as the requirements of the chosen evaluation device.

What do the status LEDs indicate?

The device includes LEDs for Power/Fault and gate status. Typical indications include: green Power/Fault for ready state, yellow Safety Gate when the actuator is in range, and red Power/Fault for an error condition. The Input LED can also indicate input state and certain fault patterns (such as partial operation).

Is there a diagnostics option for identifying individual devices in a series?

Yes. The device supports an optional diagnostics concept (often referred to as Safety Device Diagnostics) that can be used with a suitable fieldbus module to read device information and status across a series connection.

What environmental protection rating does it have?

The housing is rated to IP6K9K, and the connector area is typically IP67 when properly mated. This suits harsh industrial environments where washdown or high ingress protection is required.

Are there any key installation points to follow for reliable switching distances?

Install the switch and actuator opposite each other and parallel for the stated distances, align the marked faces so the arrows face each other, and keep at least 100 mm spacing between adjacent switches. Use appropriate mounting hardware (typically M4 with flat underside head) and observe the recommended maximum tightening torque of 0.8 Nm for fixing screws.

  • Guard door monitoring on industrial machines where non-contact actuation is preferred
  • Position monitoring of hinged or sliding access gates on production cells and work areas
  • Monitoring removable panels, covers, and maintenance hatches to confirm closed position before operation
  • Use on packaging machinery (cartoners, case packers, labellers) for interlocked guard doors and covers
  • Use on conveyor lines and transfer stations to monitor access points along the line
  • Integration on robotic enclosures and fencing gates where repeatable detection and compact mounting are needed
  • Application on palletisers, wrappers, and end-of-line equipment for access gate position detection
  • Installation on machine tool enclosures (e.g., CNC guard doors) where robust, sealed sensors are required
  • Use in washdown-prone environments where a high ingress-protection housing is beneficial
  • Series connection of multiple guard doors to reduce wiring complexity on multi-access machines
