SICK WL150-N430 (WL150N430) is a compact W150-series retro-reflective photoelectric sensor designed for reliable object detection using a reflector. It uses visible red LED light and a dual-lens optical system to provide stable switching performance in space-constrained automation applications. The sensing range is adjustable via a potentiometer, with light/dark switching selectable through the L/D control input, allowing straightforward adaptation to different target and background conditions.

Built with an ABS housing and PMMA optics, the WL150-N430 is rated IP67 for robust operation in industrial environments. It operates on 10–30 V DC with low current consumption and offers an NPN switching output with up to 100 mA output current, fast response time (≤ 0.5 ms), and switching frequency up to 1,000 Hz. Connection is via an M8 4-pin male connector, and status indication is provided through integrated LEDs for stability and output state. Supplied items include a BEF-W150-A mounting bracket and a PL20A reflector.

Website Description (NZ English) The SICK WL150-N430 is a compact W150-series retro-reflective photoelectric sensor designed for reliable presence detection using a reflector. It features visible red LED light for straightforward alignment, fast switching performance, and an NPN output with selectable light/dark switching, making it well suited to space-constrained industrial automation installations.

What type of sensor is this and how does it detect objects?

It is a retro-reflective photoelectric sensor. It emits visible red light toward a reflector and switches its output when the returned light level changes (for example, when an object blocks the beam between the sensor and reflector).

What supply voltage does it require?

The sensor operates on 10–30 V DC (UB). Ensure the supply stays within limits, including ripple tolerance.

What output type does it provide?

It provides an NPN switching output (open-collector style), suitable for typical DC input circuits when wired with the correct pull-up/load.

Can the switching logic be set to light-on or dark-on?

Yes. The switching mode supports light/dark operation, selectable via the L/D control wire.

How do I wire the sensor using the 4-pin M8 connector?

Pin 1 (BN/brown): +L; Pin 3 (BU/blue): 0 V (M); Pin 4 (BK/black): switching output Q; Pin 2 (WH/white): L/D control input.

What is the sensing range and what influences it?

Typical usable sensing range is approximately 0.01 m up to 2.0 m (depending on reflector and alignment), with a maximum range up to about 2.4 m using a larger reflector. Range depends strongly on reflector type/size, mounting alignment, and target/ambient conditions.

Does it include a reflector and mounting hardware?

Yes. It is typically supplied with a mounting bracket (BEF-W150-A) and a reflector (PL20A). This can simplify initial installation and replacement.

How is the sensing distance adjusted?

Sensing distance/sensitivity is set using the onboard potentiometer (multi-turn adjustment). Use the stability indication to optimise the setting for your application.

What do the LED indicators mean?

The green LED indicates stability (signal strength margin), and the orange LED indicates the switching output is active. These indicators help with alignment and threshold setting.

What is the response time and switching frequency?

Response time is up to 0.5 ms, and the switching frequency is up to 1,000 Hz (with a light/dark ratio of 1:1). This is suitable for fast-moving detection tasks.

What environmental rating does it have?

The housing is rated IP67 for dust-tight protection and resistance to temporary immersion, making it suitable for many industrial environments where splashes or dust are present.

What are the operating and storage temperature ranges?

Ambient operating temperature is -25 to +55 °C. Storage temperature is -40 to +75 °C.

What connector style is required to mate with the sensor?

It uses a 4-pin M8 male connector on the sensor. Use an appropriate 4-pin M8 female cordset or field-wireable connector with matching A-coding.

What are the approximate dimensions and mounting hole size?

The compact body is approximately 10 mm (W) × 28 mm (H) × 17.5 mm (D). The mounting hole is Ø 3.2 mm.

Is it protected against wiring mistakes and output faults?

Yes. It includes reverse-polarity protection and output protection features such as overcurrent and short-circuit protection, helping reduce damage from common wiring and load faults.
