| Typical Use | Compact M18 photoelectric sensing for reliable object detection where background suppression is required in automated equipment and production lines |
This is a photoelectric diffuse (direct reflection) sensor with background suppression. It detects objects by sensing the light reflected back from the target, while reducing responses from more distant backgrounds.
The adjustable sensing range is 20 mm to 150 mm (based on a 90% reflective target). Depending on target reflectivity and conditions, the maximum usable range can extend up to 300 mm.
Darker or low-reflective targets (e.g., black surfaces) are detected at shorter distances than highly reflective targets (e.g., white). For best repeatability, set the switching distance with the actual target material and surface finish.
It uses a PinPoint LED with visible red light at 650 nm, which helps with alignment because the emitted light is visible.
Switching distance is adjusted using the onboard potentiometer (270° rotation). After mounting, adjust the potentiometer while presenting the target at the desired trip point to fine-tune detection.
It provides a PNP switching output with light-on operation (the output switches when the target is detected).
Supply voltage is 10 V DC to 30 V DC, with a current consumption of approximately 30 mA.
The output load current is up to 100 mA. Note that if the supply voltage is above 24 V or ambient temperature is above 49°C, the maximum output current is reduced to 50 mA.
It uses an M12 3-pin male connector. Pin 1 (BN) = L+, Pin 3 (BU) = M (0 V), Pin 4 (BK) = Q (switching output). Pin 2 (WH) is not connected.
Typical response time is under 500 µs, and the switching frequency is up to 1,000 Hz (at a 1:1 light/dark ratio), making it suitable for fast detection tasks.
It has an M18 x 1 threaded cylindrical housing with an axial optical axis. The body dimensions are approximately 18 mm x 18 mm x 38.1 mm, and two mounting nuts are supplied for through-hole or bracket mounting.
It is rated IP67, meaning it is dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion in water under defined conditions.
Operating temperature range is -25°C to +55°C (with the noted output-current derating conditions). Storage temperature range is -40°C to +70°C.
The green LED indicates power (on when powered). The yellow LED indicates received light/object status (on when the object is detected, off when not detected).
A commonly used accessory is an M18 sensor mounting bracket such as the BEF-WN-M18 (SICK accessory reference). The sensor itself is supplied with two mounting nuts.
