The opportunity

On 9 December 2019, I received an urgent enquiry from one of Europe's premier ferry and cruise providers, a company that has been connecting the UK and Europe for nearly two centuries. They were facing a critical emergency when a cruise ship, the Ventura, was stranded off the coast of Tenerife due to multiple component failures. More than 3,100 passengers were aboard, creating an intense high-stakes scenario.

The challenge

With the ship immobilised and docked in Tenerife, rapid procurement and delivery of specialised Siemens Simadyn components; processor modules, communication modules, interface modules and power supplies became critical. These parts needed to be sourced globally, delivered overnight to Germany and then flown directly to Tenerife via a chartered aircraft.

"When 3,100 people were left stranded, our logistical capabilities were put to the test."

My solution

Recognising the critical nature of the situation, our extensive global supply network sprang into action. Leaning heavily on our Order Fulfilment Team, we rapidly sourced all necessary components, meticulously coordinating the logistics to consolidate deliveries from multiple international suppliers. Through intensive overnight coordination, we secured early pick-ups for each part, ensuring their timely arrival in Hamburg. The comprehensive logistical planning culminated perfectly with the parts being promptly loaded onto the chartered plane.

A successful outcome

Our swift, decisive actions resulted in the components arriving precisely when needed, significantly reducing the ship's downtime. The Ventura’s delay was minimised to only four days, avoiding prolonged inconvenience for thousands of passengers and ensuring minimal disruption. The swift success of the project generated a great amount of appreciation: "On behalf of the entire team, we would like to personally thank you for your outstanding efforts. We are delighted to have such flexible and committed suppliers on board."
