SICK DT35-B15551 is a compact laser distance sensor designed for accurate, non-contact measurement across a mid-range working span of 50 to 1200 mm. Built in a robust plastic block housing with IP65/IP67 protection, it suits demanding industrial environments where space is limited but reliable distance feedback is essential.

The sensor operates on a 12–30 V DC supply with low current consumption (≤100 mA) and provides flexible integration via PNP/NPN (push-pull) switching along with a configurable output that can be used as an analogue signal (0–10 V or 4–20 mA) or as a digital output, depending on the application. A 5-pin M12 connection supports straightforward wiring, while a fast switching frequency (up to 166 Hz) enables responsive control for moving targets.

Typical uses include position monitoring, height and level measurement, presence/clearance checks, and distance-based control tasks on automated machinery, conveyors, and handling systems.

What does this sensor do in an industrial application?

It measures distance using a time-of-flight laser principle and provides the measured value via a configurable output (analogue or digital), making it suitable for non-contact position, level, presence, and distance monitoring.

What is the usable measuring range?

The specified measuring range is 50 mm to 1,200 mm (mid-range distance measurement).

What supply voltage does it require?

It operates on 12 to 30 V DC. If IO-Link is used, the supply should be above 18 V DC; if using an analogue voltage output, the supply should be above 13 V DC.

What output options are available?

The second output (Qa/Q2) is configurable as a current output (4–20 mA), voltage output (0–10 V), or a digital switching output. A separate switching output (Q1/C) is also provided.

Is it compatible with both PNP and NPN control inputs?

Yes. The unit supports PNP/NPN logic, and it can be set up to match typical PLC digital input requirements depending on configuration and wiring.

What is the maximum load for the analogue outputs?

For 4–20 mA operation, the load should be up to 450 Ω. For 0–10 V operation, the load should be at least 50 Ω.

How fast can it update measurements?

It is specified at up to 166 Hz measurement rate, and the response time is specified as up to 60 ms (depending on configuration).

How repeatable are the measurements?

Repeatability is specified in the range of roughly 8–12 mm depending on target reflectivity (remission) and operating mode/characteristic curve.

Can hysteresis be set for switching behaviour?

Yes. Hysteresis is adjustable, with a specified range from 0 mm up to 11,950 mm (settable via IO-Link).

What connector type is used and how is it pinned?

It uses an M12, 5-pin male connector. Typical pin assignment is: Pin 1 (brown) L+; Pin 2 (white) QA/Q2; Pin 3 (blue) M (0 V); Pin 4 (black) Q1/C; Pin 5 (grey) MF1 (multifunction input).

What is the multifunction input used for?

The MF1 input is a configurable control input used for functions such as external teach/trigger or other selectable behaviours depending on parameterisation.

What are the enclosure and environmental ratings?

The housing is plastic (ABS/PC) with a PMMA front window, and the protection rating is IP65/IP67. Operating temperature is specified as –30 °C to +55 °C (with supply voltage up to 24 V).

What are the physical size and weight for installation planning?

Overall dimensions are approximately 32 mm × 58.67 mm × 42.7 mm, and the weight is about 65 g.

How long does it take to start measuring after power-up?

Initialisation time is specified as up to 500 ms, and a warm-up time of up to 20 minutes is specified for optimum stability.

Is IO-Link available for parameterisation and diagnostics?

Yes. IO-Link can be used to configure outputs and parameters (such as hysteresis) and to access device data. When using IO-Link, supply voltage should be above 18 V DC.

  • Non-contact distance measurement for positioning and spacing checks on automated production lines
  • Conveyor height and clearance monitoring for boxes, totes and pallets as they pass through a station
  • Robotic end-effector approach control, helping maintain a consistent standoff distance to the target surface
  • In-line length and dimension verification by measuring to a reference surface or datum point
  • Filling level monitoring in small hoppers, bins or containers where contact measurement is impractical
  • Buffer and accumulation control by tracking the distance to the leading edge of a product queue
  • Web, sheet or panel alignment checks by measuring offset to an edge guide or fixed reference
  • Gap, slot and separation measurement between components during assembly and handling
  • Detecting part presence and confirming correct seating by verifying expected distance at a fixture point
  • Pick-and-place zone confirmation, ensuring items are within a defined distance window before handling
  • Machine set-up and changeover validation by measuring tool, carriage or slide position to a reference point
  • Basic profiling across a single axis by capturing distance changes to identify out-of-tolerance surfaces
