SICK WTB4-3P3061S20 (WTB43P3061S20) is a compact MultiPulse photoelectric proximity sensor designed for precise, repeatable detection of small objects in tight machine spaces. Using a visible red PinPoint LED (650 nm) with background suppression, it helps maintain stable switching even when a reflective or variable background is present. The sensor features a line-shaped light spot and an oscillating output characteristic, with sensitivity set via a 5-turn potentiometer for accurate adjustment across short sensing distances.

Built for industrial environments, it operates on 10–30 V DC and provides a PNP light-on switching output (up to 100 mA) with fast response (< 0.5 ms). The housing is compact (16 mm x 39.5 mm x 12 mm), lightweight, and sealed to IP66/IP67, with an M8 3-pin connector on a 300 mm PVC cable for straightforward integration. Suitable for use across a wide temperature range from –40 °C to +60 °C.

What type of photoelectric sensor is this?

It is a diffuse-reflection photoelectric sensor with background suppression, designed to detect objects based on reflected visible red light while reducing false switching from the background.

What is the typical sensing range?

The adjustable sensing range is approximately 4 mm to 150 mm (depending on target reflectivity and application conditions).

How does background suppression help in real applications?

Background suppression allows the sensor to detect objects within a set distance while ignoring surfaces behind the target, improving reliability on conveyors and in tight machine spaces.

What light source does it use and what is the wavelength?

It uses visible red light from a PinPoint LED, with a wavelength of about 650 nm.

How small is the light spot?

The light spot is approximately 7 mm in diameter at 50 mm distance, helping with the detection of smaller objects compared with broader-beam sensors.

What output type does it have?

It provides a PNP switching output with a maximum output current of up to 100 mA.

Is the switching behaviour light-on or dark-on?

It is configured as light-on switching (the output switches when sufficient light is received from the target).

How do I set the detection distance or sensitivity?

Adjustment is via an on-device potentiometer with a 5-turn range, allowing finer distance/sensitivity setting for stable detection.

What are the supply voltage requirements?

The sensor operates on 10–30 V DC, making it suitable for common 24 V DC industrial control systems (including WTB4-3P3061S20 installations).

What connector and cabling arrangement is used?

It uses a 3-pin M8 connection via an integrated cable with an M8 plug (approximately 300 mm lead).

What are the response time and switching frequency?

Typical response time is under 0.5 ms, and the specified switching frequency is 2 Hz (at a 1:1 light/dark ratio).

What do the LEDs indicate?

A green LED indicates the supply voltage is active, and a yellow LED indicates the status of received light (useful for alignment and setup checks).

What environmental protection does the housing provide?

The housing is rated IP66 and IP67 and is designed for industrial environments, with an operating temperature range of approximately –40 °C to +60 °C.

What does “oscillating output” mean on this sensor variant?

This special behaviour provides a changing (oscillating) output signal when an object is present, which can be useful for certain detection tasks where a dynamic signal is preferred over a steady state.

  • Detecting small parts and components on fast-moving conveyors where precise, close-range sensing is required
  • Presence confirmation of products at pick-and-place stations, feeders, and indexing tables
  • Leading-edge detection for triggering labelling, printing, marking, or inspection steps
  • Verifying that items have reached a defined stop position on assembly and packaging lines
  • Counting discrete items passing a point on a belt, chute, or vibratory track
  • Checking for missing parts or gaps in a stream of components during automatic handling
  • Detecting thin or low-profile objects using a line-shaped light spot to improve repeatability
  • Confirming correct placement of inserts, caps, or closures before the next process stage
  • Monitoring part ejection and transfer points to confirm successful hand-off between mechanisms
  • Detecting small cartons, blisters, or trays at short distances in compact machinery layouts
  • Providing stable object detection in front of backgrounds where suppression helps reduce false switching
  • Position sensing in compact automated workcells where space constraints favour a small rectangular sensor body
