What does this soft starter do?

This unit is designed to control the starting and stopping of three-phase asynchronous motors. By ramping voltage more gradually than a direct-on-line start, it can help reduce mechanical shock, limit inrush current and improve control during motor acceleration and deceleration.

What types of motors is it suitable for?

It is intended for asynchronous motors used in process and infrastructure applications. It can be used in installations where controlled starting, stopping and motor protection are important parts of the application.

What supply voltage range can it work with?

This model is suitable for a three-phase power supply from 208 to 690 V AC at 50/60 Hz. The control supply range is 110 to 230 V AC, making it suitable for a wide variety of industrial panels and motor control arrangements.

What is the rated current of this unit?

The unit has a rated operational current of 110 A for normal duty and 88 A for heavy duty at 40°C. Although some listings may summarise it differently, the Schneider ATS480C11Y datasheet identifies this model as a 110 A soft starter.

What motor power ratings can it handle?

Motor ratings depend on voltage and connection method. In the motor supply line, it is rated up to 30 kW at 230 V, 55 kW at 400 V and 440 V, 75 kW at 500 V and 525 V, and up to 90 kW at 660 V and 690 V under normal duty. For heavy duty use, the ratings are lower, for example 45 kW at 400 V and 75 kW at 690 V.

Can it be connected in-line or inside the delta?

Yes. This soft starter can be connected in the motor supply line or to the motor delta terminals, depending on the application and motor arrangement. This gives added flexibility when designing or replacing a motor starting system.

Does it include built-in motor protection features?

Yes. It includes integrated motor overload protection and Class 10E thermal protection. Available protection functions include phase failure, current overload, underload, excessive starting time, locked rotor detection, motor phase loss and line supply phase loss.

What communication options are available?

The unit includes Modbus serial communication via RJ45 with a 2-wire RS-485 physical interface. It also supports optional communication modules for networks such as PROFINET, Profibus DP V1, Modbus TCP/EtherNet/IP and CANopen.

What inputs and outputs are provided?

It includes 4 digital inputs, 3 relay outputs, 2 programmable digital outputs, 1 analogue output and analogue input capability for PTC/Pt100 temperature probes. This helps the unit integrate into broader control systems and motor monitoring arrangements.

Does it have a display screen?

Yes. The unit is equipped with a display screen, which can make commissioning and local parameter viewing more convenient within the panel environment.

What is the enclosure protection rating?

This model is rated IP20. That means it is intended for installation inside a suitable electrical enclosure where additional protection from dust, moisture and accidental contact can be provided by the panel design.

What are the physical dimensions of the unit?

The unit measures 290 mm high, 190 mm wide and 247 mm deep, with a net weight of 8.3 kg. These dimensions can be useful when checking panel space for a replacement or new installation.

What operating temperatures can it handle?

It can operate from -15°C to 40°C without derating. From 40°C to 60°C, current derating applies at 2% per °C. For storage, the specified temperature range is -25°C to 70°C.

Is torque control available on this model?

Yes. Torque control is included, which can be beneficial in applications where smoother and more controlled motor starting behaviour is required.

  • Reducing motor starting current in three-phase pump installations to help limit voltage dip and mechanical stress.
  • Providing smooth, controlled start-up for fans and blowers in HVAC and industrial ventilation systems.
  • Managing the acceleration of conveyors to reduce belt shock, product movement and wear on drive components.
  • Soft starting compressors to help minimise sudden torque peaks during motor start.
  • Controlling the start of mixers and agitators where gradual acceleration is preferred over direct-on-line switching.
  • Improving start and stop performance on water and wastewater equipment, including pumping stations and treatment plant drives.
  • Supporting heavy-duty motor applications in process plants where controlled ramp-up is needed for reliable operation.
  • Reducing mechanical strain on couplings, shafts, gearboxes and driven equipment during motor starting.
  • Enabling gentler motor starting in infrastructure systems such as building services, utilities and industrial facilities.
  • Using inside-the-delta or in-line motor connections where installation requirements call for flexible starter integration.
  • Adding controlled stopping behaviour for applications where a simple coast stop is not ideal.
  • Integrating into motor control panels for asynchronous motors across manufacturing, processing and site utility systems.
