Murr Elektronik 58183 is a compact, IP67-rated managed Ethernet switch designed for reliable 10/100Base-T networking directly in the field. Built in a robust black plastic housing with five M12 D-coded female ports, it enables decentralised network expansion on machines and production lines where washdown, dust or vibration demand a sealed, ruggedised solution.

This 5-port switch supports full-duplex operation with auto-negotiation and auto-crossover for straightforward commissioning, and includes features for stable network structures such as STP/RSTP ring topology support and LLDP frame forwarding. For monitoring and administration, it provides managed functionality including SNMP (v1, v2c and v3), a built-in web interface (HTTP/HTTPS), SSH access, syslog messaging, SNMP traps, RMON, and 1:1 port mirroring. Time synchronisation via NTP client is supported, and remote access capability is available via an OpenVPN client.

The 58183 operates from 9.5 to 31.5 V DC (supply via Pin 1/3) and incorporates reverse-polarity and overvoltage protection. It is suitable for 3-hole screw mounting and measures 105 × 60 × 40 mm, with an operating temperature range of 0 to 60 °C.

What does this device do in an industrial network?

It is a compact, field-mountable managed Ethernet switch designed to interconnect multiple industrial Ethernet nodes close to the machine, reducing cabinet wiring while enabling network management functions.

How many Ethernet ports does it provide and at what speed?

It provides 5 Ethernet ports supporting 10/100BASE-T with a maximum data transmission rate of 100 Mbit/s.

What connector style is used for the Ethernet ports?

The Ethernet ports are M12 female connectors with D-coding (4-pole), commonly used for robust, sealed industrial Ethernet connections.

How is the unit powered?

Power is supplied via an M12 A-coded, 5-pole power connection using Supply Pin 1/3.

What is the operating voltage range?

The DC operating voltage range is 9.5 V to 31.5 V.

What is the typical current consumption?

Current consumption is specified from 97.5 mA (minimum) up to 162.5 mA (maximum), depending on operating conditions.

Is it suitable for washdown or dusty environments?

It is rated IP67, meaning it is protected against dust ingress and temporary immersion, making it suitable for harsh field environments when properly mated with compatible connectors.

Does it support ring redundancy for improved network uptime?

Yes. It supports ring topology using RSTP/STP, helping maintain communication if a link is interrupted.

What network management capabilities are available?

It supports SNMP (v1, v2c, v3), port mirroring (1:1), RMON, Syslog, and LLDP frame forwarding. It also provides a built-in web page over HTTP/HTTPS for device setup and monitoring.

Does it support VLANs?

No. IEEE 802.1Q VLAN management is not supported on this model.

How can the device obtain an IP address?

It supports BOOTP/DHCP client operation, as well as DCP and an SSH command line for addressing and management.

Does it support time synchronisation?

Yes. It includes an NTP client for time synchronisation.

What are the operating and storage temperature ranges?

Operating temperature is 0°C to 60°C. Storage temperature is -40°C to 85°C.

What are the dimensions and mounting method?

Approximate dimensions are 105 mm (H) × 60 mm (W) × 40 mm (D). It is suitable for 3-hole screw mounting.

Does it include protective features for power wiring mistakes?

Yes. It includes reverse-polarity protection and overvoltage protection. For reference in documentation, this device is often identified as 58183.
