The Pepperl + Fuchs KFD2-ER-EX1.W.LB is a conductive switch amplifier designed for intrinsic safety applications involving level sensing electrodes. This 1-channel isolated barrier provides an AC measuring voltage to the field electrodes and switches a relay contact when the measured medium reaches the configured level. It is suitable for on/off control as well as minimum/maximum level control, making it a practical choice for monitoring conductive liquids in industrial process environments.

The unit operates from a 20–30 V DC supply via Power Rail or terminals 14+ and 15-, and features an adjustable response sensitivity range of 1 kΩ to 150 kΩ. It includes a relay contact output and a fault relay contact output, with configurable signal damping from 0.5 to 10 seconds. Line breakage detection can be enabled using the DIP switch settings, with fault indication provided by a red LED. The front panel also includes status LEDs for power and relay output, along with a potentiometer for response sensitivity adjustment.

Built for DIN rail installation, the KFD2-ER-EX1.W.LB has a compact 20 x 119 x 115 mm housing and IP20 protection. Field-side connections are made through terminals 1, 2, and 3, while control-side relay outputs are available on terminals 7–12. With galvanic isolation between input, output, and power supply, this conductive switch amplifier provides reliable signal separation for level control circuits in hazardous area applications.

What type of device is this?

It is a conductive switch amplifier used as a 1-channel isolated barrier for level sensing applications. It processes signals from conductive level electrodes and provides relay contact outputs for control-side switching.

What is the main application of this conductive switch amplifier?

This device is typically used for monitoring liquid levels with conductive electrodes, including on/off level control and minimum/maximum level control in industrial process environments.

What supply voltage does the unit require?

The KFD2-ER-EX1.W.LB is designed for a 20 to 30 V DC rated supply and can be powered via Power Rail or through terminals 14+ and 15-.

What kind of input does the device use?

The unit has a level sensing input for conductive electrodes. For minimum/maximum control, terminals 1, 2, and 3 are used; for on/off control, terminals 1 and 3 are used.

What output does the amplifier provide?

The device provides relay contact outputs on the control side. The relay output is suitable for switching loads up to 253 V AC at 2 A or 40 V DC at 2 A for resistive loads.

Does the device include line fault detection?

Yes. The unit includes lead breakage detection, often abbreviated as LB. When this function is enabled, a red LED indicates a detected line fault, and the second output can be used as a fault signal output.

Can the response sensitivity be adjusted?

Yes. The response sensitivity is adjustable from 1 kΩ to 150 kΩ using the front potentiometer, allowing the device to be matched to the conductivity of the measured medium.

Can the signal delay be configured?

Yes. The signal damping time constant can be selected using DIP switches. Available settings are 0.5 s, 2 s, 5 s, and 10 s.

What do the front LEDs indicate?

The front LEDs indicate operating status: a green LED for power supply, a yellow LED for relay output status, and a red LED for lead breakage detection.

How is the switching behaviour configured?

The switching behaviour is configured using DIP switch S1. The device can be set for open circuit current principle or closed circuit current principle, depending on the required relay action when the limit is reached.

What mounting method is used?

The device is designed for mounting on a 35 mm DIN rail in accordance with EN 60715. Its compact housing is approximately 20 mm wide, making it suitable for dense control cabinet layouts.

What are the approximate dimensions and weight?

The unit measures approximately 20 x 119 x 115 mm, with a mass of about 150 g. These dimensions correspond to a slim DIN rail module format.

What ambient temperature range is specified?

The specified ambient operating temperature range is -20 °C to 60 °C, equivalent to -4 °F to 140 °F.

What degree of protection does the housing provide?

The device has an IP20 degree of protection. It is intended for installation inside a suitable control cabinet or enclosure.

Which terminals are used for the relay outputs?

The relay output connections are on the control side at terminals 7, 8, 9 and 10, 11, 12. These provide the switching contacts used by the connected control circuit.

What accessories are commonly associated with this module?

Common associated accessories include KF series removable terminal blocks, coding pins, compatible Power Rail components, and DIN rail profile accessories for cabinet installation.
