The Pepperl+Fuchs 231393, model KFD2-STC4-Ex1.H, is a single-channel isolated barrier and SMART transmitter power supply for process automation applications. It supplies 2-wire and 3-wire SMART transmitters in hazardous areas while transferring a galvanically isolated 0/4–20 mA signal to the control side. The module supports bidirectional HART, BRAIN and Foxboro communication, with integrated HART test points and an internal 250 Ω communication resistor. Operating from a 20–35 V DC supply through terminals or a Power Rail, it provides up to 17.6 V DC field voltage, supports loads up to 800 Ω and is rated up to SIL 2. The IP20 housing mounts on a standard 35 mm DIN rail and operates across an ambient temperature range of -20°C to 60°C.

What type of device is this?

It is a single-channel isolated barrier and SMART transmitter power supply designed to interface field instruments in hazardous areas with control equipment in a safe area.

Which field instruments can be connected?

The device supports 2-wire and 3-wire SMART transmitters, as well as 2-wire SMART current sources.

What input and output signals does it support?

It accepts a 0/4 mA to 20 mA analogue input and transfers it to the control side as an electrically isolated 0/4 mA to 20 mA output.

Does it support HART communication?

Yes. Bidirectional HART communication can be superimposed on the analogue signal. Integrated test sockets also allow a HART communicator to be connected.

Which other SMART communication protocols are supported?

In addition to HART, the 231393 supports BRAIN and Foxboro SMART communication protocols.

What is the required supply voltage?

The rated supply range is 20 V DC to 35 V DC. Power can be provided through the Power Rail or through terminals 14+ and 15-.

What load can be connected to the output?

The output supports a load of 0 to 800 ohms at 20 mA.

What is the purpose of the internal 250-ohm resistor?

The internal 250-ohm resistor between terminals 8 and 9 can be used when the loop resistance is too low for reliable HART communication.

What level of galvanic isolation is provided?

The input and output, as well as the input and power supply, are galvanically isolated with a specified peak isolation value of 375 V. The output-to-power-supply connection has functional insulation rated at 50 V AC.

Can it be used with instruments installed in hazardous areas?

Yes. It is designed for intrinsically safe applications and carries ATEX, IECEx and cULus-related approvals for specified gas, dust and mining environments. Installation must follow the applicable certification and control documentation.

What are its operating temperature and ingress protection ratings?

The specified ambient operating temperature range is -20°C to 60°C, and the enclosure has an IP20 rating.

How is the device mounted?

It mounts on a standard 35 mm DIN rail in accordance with EN 60715. It can also connect to a compatible Power Rail arrangement.

What are the device dimensions and approximate mass?

The unit measures approximately 20 × 124 × 115 mm and has a mass of about 200 g.

What indication is provided on the front panel?

A green LED indicates the power-supply status. The front panel also includes a labelling area and removable terminal blocks.

What functional integrity rating does it meet?

The device is rated up to SIL 2 in accordance with IEC 61508 when applied within the specified system design and operating conditions.
