What type of sensing device is this?

This is a compact retroreflective photoelectric sensor with a built-in amplifier. It uses a red LED light source and works with a reflector to detect the presence of an object when the light path is interrupted.

How does a retroreflective sensor work?

A retroreflective sensor sends light towards a reflector and monitors the returned beam. When an item passes between the sensor and the reflector, the beam is reduced or blocked, allowing the sensor to switch its output. The E3S-AR61 uses a polarised retroreflective method, which helps improve detection stability in many industrial applications.

The rated sensing distance is 0.1 to 2 metres. Actual performance can vary depending on alignment, reflector choice, object size and the installation environment.

This sensor is designed for a 10 to 30 VDC power supply, with ripple up to 10% maximum.

It provides an NPN open-collector output. The control output is rated up to 30 VDC and 100 mA maximum, making it suitable for many standard DC control circuits.

It is a pre-wired version supplied with a 2 metre PVC cable. For the E3S-AR61, the cable is a 3-core type.

Can the operating mode be changed?

Yes. The operating mode is switch-selectable between Light-ON and Dark-ON, which gives more flexibility during installation and setup.

Does it include a reflector?

Yes. Retroreflective versions in this series are supplied with an E39-R1 reflector, so the sensor can be installed as a complete retroreflective sensing set.
