Omron E3S-AR61 is a compact vertical photoelectric sensor from the E3S-A series, designed for reliable retroreflective object detection in industrial automation applications. Using a polarised red LED light source and built-in amplifier, it offers dependable sensing over a range of 0.1 to 2 m, making it well suited to conveyors, packaging machinery, material handling systems and general factory equipment.

This pre-wired NPN output model operates on a 10 to 30 VDC supply and features switch-selectable Light-ON and Dark-ON operation for flexible installation. Its fast 0.5 ms response time supports accurate detection of moving targets, while the sensitivity adjuster and stability indication help simplify set-up and alignment. The robust housing is rated to IP67 and NEMA 4X, providing strong resistance to dust and water ingress in demanding environments.

The E3S-AR61 is supplied in a vertical mounting format with a 2 m cable connection, and as a retroreflective version it is intended for use with a reflector. This combination of compact dimensions, straightforward adjustment and durable construction makes it a practical choice where space is limited but consistent sensing performance is essential.

What type of sensing device is this?

This is a compact retroreflective photoelectric sensor with a built-in amplifier. It uses a red LED light source and works with a reflector to detect the presence of an object when the light path is interrupted.

How does a retroreflective sensor work?

A retroreflective sensor sends light towards a reflector and monitors the returned beam. When an item passes between the sensor and the reflector, the beam is reduced or blocked, allowing the sensor to switch its output. The E3S-AR61 uses a polarised retroreflective method, which helps improve detection stability in many industrial applications.

What is the sensing range?

The rated sensing distance is 0.1 to 2 metres. Actual performance can vary depending on alignment, reflector choice, object size and the installation environment.

What power supply does it require?

This sensor is designed for a 10 to 30 VDC power supply, with ripple up to 10% maximum.

What output type does it provide?

It provides an NPN open-collector output. The control output is rated up to 30 VDC and 100 mA maximum, making it suitable for many standard DC control circuits.

Is it pre-wired or connectorised?

It is a pre-wired version supplied with a 2 metre PVC cable. For the E3S-AR61, the cable is a 3-core type.

Can the operating mode be changed?

Yes. The operating mode is switch-selectable between Light-ON and Dark-ON, which gives more flexibility during installation and setup.

Does it include a reflector?

Yes. Retroreflective versions in this series are supplied with an E39-R1 reflector, so the sensor can be installed as a complete retroreflective sensing set.

Is mounting hardware included?

Yes. A mounting bracket is included with the sensor. For vertical versions such as the E3S-AR61, the supplied bracket is intended to suit that mounting orientation.

What indicators and adjustments are available on the unit?

The sensor includes a red light indicator, a green stability indicator and a sensitivity adjustor. These features help with alignment, setup and confirming stable operation.

How quickly does it respond to detection changes?

The response time is 0.5 ms maximum for both operation and release, which makes it suitable for fast-moving automated equipment.

Is it suitable for use in demanding industrial environments?

Yes. The housing is designed for industrial use and carries an IP67 enclosure rating as well as NEMA 4X. It is also specified for operating temperatures from -25°C to 55°C, provided there is no icing.

What are the typical applications for this kind of sensor?

This style of sensor is commonly used for object presence detection, conveyor monitoring, packaging machinery, material handling systems and general factory automation tasks where a compact photoelectric sensor with reflector-based sensing is preferred.

What orientation is this version designed for?

This version is the vertical-mount format within the series. That makes it a practical choice where the optical axis and cable routing need to suit a vertically arranged installation layout.

  • Detecting cartons, trays and other products on conveyor systems in packaging and distribution lines
  • Confirming the presence or absence of items at transfer points, guides and stop positions
  • Object counting on automated handling equipment where reliable non-contact sensing is required
  • Monitoring product flow into sortation, labelling and inspection stations
  • Position checking for materials moving through assembly and light industrial production processes
  • Presence detection for bottles, containers and packaged goods in food and beverage machinery
  • Sensing pallets, totes and carrier units in compact material handling applications
  • Detecting wrapped or reflective items with a retroreflective sensing arrangement and separate reflector
  • Space-saving installation on machinery where a vertical sensor format suits restricted mounting areas
  • General machine automation tasks requiring a compact built-in amplifier photoelectric sensor with NPN output
