SICK GRTB18S-P2317 is a compact cylindrical photoelectric sensor designed for reliable object detection at short to medium distances. Using a visible red PinPoint LED (650 nm) with background suppression, it helps distinguish targets from surrounding surfaces for stable switching in space‑constrained machine builds.

The sensor features an M18 x 1 threaded housing (ABS) with durable PMMA optics and an IP67 enclosure rating for demanding industrial environments. Switching distance is adjustable via a 270° potentiometer, with a typical sensing range of 20 mm to 150 mm (up to 300 mm depending on target reflectivity). Clear status indication is provided by integrated green (power) and yellow (light reception/object) LEDs.

Electrical connection is via an M12, 3‑pin connector. It operates on 10–30 V DC and provides a PNP switching output (light switching) with up to 100 mA output current, fast response (< 500 µs) and up to 1,000 Hz switching frequency, making it suitable for presence detection, counting and positioning tasks in automation and material handling applications.

Typical Use Compact M18 photoelectric sensing for reliable object detection where background suppression is required in automated equipment and production lines

What type of sensor is this and what does it detect?

This is a photoelectric diffuse (direct reflection) sensor with background suppression. It detects objects by sensing the light reflected back from the target, while reducing responses from more distant backgrounds.

What is the typical operating sensing distance?

The adjustable sensing range is 20 mm to 150 mm (based on a 90% reflective target). Depending on target reflectivity and conditions, the maximum usable range can extend up to 300 mm.

How does target colour or reflectivity affect sensing distance?

Darker or low-reflective targets (e.g., black surfaces) are detected at shorter distances than highly reflective targets (e.g., white). For best repeatability, set the switching distance with the actual target material and surface finish.

What light source does it use, and is the light visible?

It uses a PinPoint LED with visible red light at 650 nm, which helps with alignment because the emitted light is visible.

How can the switching distance be adjusted?

Switching distance is adjusted using the onboard potentiometer (270° rotation). After mounting, adjust the potentiometer while presenting the target at the desired trip point to fine-tune detection.

What output type does it provide?

It provides a PNP switching output with light-on operation (the output switches when the target is detected).

What are the power requirements?

Supply voltage is 10 V DC to 30 V DC, with a current consumption of approximately 30 mA.

What is the maximum load current on the output?

The output load current is up to 100 mA. Note that if the supply voltage is above 24 V or ambient temperature is above 49°C, the maximum output current is reduced to 50 mA.

What is the connection type and pinout?

It uses an M12 3-pin male connector. Pin 1 (BN) = L+, Pin 3 (BU) = M (0 V), Pin 4 (BK) = Q (switching output). Pin 2 (WH) is not connected.

How fast does it switch for high-speed applications?

Typical response time is under 500 µs, and the switching frequency is up to 1,000 Hz (at a 1:1 light/dark ratio), making it suitable for fast detection tasks.

What are the mechanical size and mounting details?

It has an M18 x 1 threaded cylindrical housing with an axial optical axis. The body dimensions are approximately 18 mm x 18 mm x 38.1 mm, and two mounting nuts are supplied for through-hole or bracket mounting.

How well is it protected against dust and water ingress?

It is rated IP67, meaning it is dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion in water under defined conditions.

What operating temperature range should be considered?

Operating temperature range is -25°C to +55°C (with the noted output-current derating conditions). Storage temperature range is -40°C to +70°C.

What do the indicator LEDs show?

The green LED indicates power (on when powered). The yellow LED indicates received light/object status (on when the object is detected, off when not detected).

Does it come with any recommended mounting accessory?

A commonly used accessory is an M18 sensor mounting bracket such as the BEF-WN-M18 (SICK accessory reference). The sensor itself is supplied with two mounting nuts.

  • Reliable presence detection of parts on conveyors, with background suppression to minimise false triggers from machine frames or belt surfaces
  • Part counting and spacing control in high-speed handling and sorting lines
  • Object detection at infeed/outfeed points for packaging machines, case packing, and cartoning equipment
  • Verification of product position before labelling, sealing, or printing operations
  • Detection of small components in assembly stations, including pick-and-place confirmation and missed-part checks
  • Monitoring of bottles, trays, and punnets on filling and capping lines where consistent switching is needed despite varying backgrounds
  • Triggering of pneumatic or mechanical actuators when a target enters a defined sensing window
  • Detection of items on chutes and slides to prevent jams and to control release gates
  • Registration and presence checks for single items in trays or pockets on indexing tables
  • General machine automation sensing where an M18, red-light photoelectric sensor with an adjustable switching distance is preferred for compact integration
