The Beckhoff KL2521 is a single-channel pulse train output Bus Terminal designed for precise control and positioning applications. It converts a binary setpoint into a variable-frequency output signal, electrically isolated from the K-bus, for connection to compatible stepper motors, servo drives and frequency converters.

Its RS422-compatible output stage supports frequency modulation, pulse-and-direction signalling and incremental encoder simulation using channels A and B. Integrated acceleration and braking ramps help provide smooth frequency changes while reducing the processing demands placed on the main controller. LED indicators display active output states, assisting with straightforward system monitoring and diagnostics.

What type of industrial component is this terminal?

The KL2521 is a single-channel pulse train output Bus Terminal designed to generate variable-frequency digital signals for drive control and positioning applications.

What applications is this output terminal commonly used for?

Typical applications include controlling stepper motors, servo drives and frequency converters, as well as carrying out straightforward positioning tasks and synchronising multiple drives.

Which pulse patterns can the terminal generate?

It can generate frequency modulation, pulse-and-direction signals and incremental encoder simulation. These patterns allow it to interface with several common drive input arrangements.

How does incremental encoder simulation work?

The A and B channels generate signals with a 90-degree phase offset. The phase sequence indicates the direction of movement, creating an output comparable to that of an incremental encoder.

How is direction represented in pulse-and-direction mode?

In this mode, channel A carries the pulse frequency while the logic level on channel B indicates the required direction of rotation.

What is the maximum output frequency?

The KL2521 can generate output frequencies of up to 500 kHz, making it suitable for drive systems that require rapid pulse commands.

What electrical interface does the output stage use?

The standard terminal uses an RS422-compatible output stage. This differential signalling method is well suited to reliable pulse transmission in industrial control installations.

Is the output electrically isolated from the terminal bus?

Yes. The generated pulse signal is electrically isolated from the K-bus, helping separate the field-side output from the terminal communication system.

Can the output signals be inverted?

Yes. The available pulse patterns can be inverted to accommodate different input circuit requirements.

What do the front LEDs indicate?

The LEDs display the active states of the terminal's output signals. They operate in step with the corresponding outputs, providing a clear visual indication during operation.

Can the terminal manage acceleration and deceleration ramps?

Yes. Ramp start frequency and run-up time parameters can be used so that the terminal performs smooth acceleration and braking transitions when the requested frequency changes.

What is the advantage of pulse train control over an analogue setpoint?

Pulse train control communicates the setpoint digitally, avoiding analogue offset drift while providing fine frequency resolution and precise positioning commands.

Can it be used to synchronise frequency converters?

Yes. Its incremental encoder simulation mode can provide a common reference signal for synchronising several frequency converters or related drive axes.

How many pulse output channels are provided?

The terminal is classed as a one-channel pulse train output device, with A and B signal paths used together to produce the selected pulse pattern and direction information.

What should be checked before installing this terminal?

Confirm the required signal standard, pulse pattern, maximum command frequency, terminal-bus compatibility, wiring arrangement and the input requirements of the connected drive.
