The SICK 1200020, model M40E-034000RR0, is a three-beam receiver from the M4000 Standard range of safety multibeam sensors. Designed for use with a compatible transmitter, it provides optically synchronised detection with 400 mm beam spacing and a 10 ms response time. Its configurable scanning range supports distances from 0.5 to 70 metres.

Operating on a nominal 24 V DC supply, the receiver features two PNP semiconductor safety outputs, an eight-pin M12 connector, configuration buttons and a seven-segment display. Beam coding, an internal restart interlock and external device monitoring support integration into machine safeguarding systems. The powder-coated aluminium housing and scratch-resistant polycarbonate front screen provide robust construction, with IP65 protection and an operating temperature range of −30 °C to +55 °C. Safety classifications include Type 4, SIL 3 and PL e, Category 4.

What type of sensor is this?

This is an M4000 Standard multibeam safety sensor receiver. It forms the receiving side of a sender-and-receiver system, with three beams spaced 400 mm apart. The receiver is not a complete sender-and-receiver pair.

What scanning range does the receiver offer?

The receiver has two configurable scanning ranges: 0.5–20 m and 9–70 m. The factory configuration is 0.5–20 m.

How quickly does the receiver respond?

The specified response time is 10 ms. This is the receiver’s response time, rather than the total stopping time of the connected machine.

What supply voltage is required?

The receiver requires a nominal 24 V DC supply and accepts an operating voltage range of 19.2–28.8 V DC. Its current consumption without an output load is no more than 0.6 A.

Which electrical connection does the receiver use?

The system connection is an eight-pin M12 male connector. The specified permitted cable length is 15 m, subject to the load, power supply and conductor cross-section. The permitted conductor cross-section is at least 0.25 mm².

What outputs are provided?

The receiver has two PNP semiconductor output signal switching devices, known as OSSDs. These outputs are short-circuit protected and monitored for cross-circuits, with a maximum current-carrying capacity of 500 mA per OSSD.

What safety performance ratings are specified?

The specified ratings are Type 4 under IEC 61496-1, SIL 3 under IEC 61508, and Category 4 and Performance Level e under EN ISO 13849. These are device ratings; they do not independently establish the rating of a complete installation.

Does the receiver include restart interlocking and external device monitoring?

Yes. The receiver includes a restart interlock and external device monitoring, or EDM. The factory settings use an internal restart interlock with EDM activated.

How is the receiver configured, and what indicators are fitted?

Configuration is carried out using buttons on the device. LEDs and a seven-segment display provide local indication. Beam coding is configurable, with the receiver supplied in an uncoded configuration.

What environmental conditions can the receiver withstand?

The receiver has an IP65 enclosure rating and an operating ambient temperature range of −30 °C to +55 °C. The specified relative humidity range is 15–95%, non-condensing.

What materials are used in the housing and front screen?

The housing is made from powder-coated aluminium alloy. The front screen is polycarbonate with a scratch-resistant coating, and the housing cross-section measures 52 × 55.5 mm.

How does the receiver synchronise with the sender?

The receiver uses optical synchronisation with the sender. Its specified optical wavelength is 850 nm.

  • Monitoring access points to guarded machinery using three photoelectric beams.
  • Detecting personnel entering restricted areas around automated production cells.
  • Providing non-contact access protection at conveyor entry and exit points.
  • Monitoring perimeter openings around robotic workstations.
  • Safeguarding access routes to palletising and material-handling equipment.
  • Integrating with machine safety controls to initiate a stop when a protective beam is interrupted.
